A dialogue with bio-based industries transforming raw materials into new resources
The bio-based industry is an emerging sector that links interconnected value chains. Its aim is to transform renewable biological raw materials (such as agricultural by-products, forest residues, organic waste and aquatic biomass) into biochemicals, materials, products and energy, replacing their fossil-based versions.
Despite its current size and expected growth, this sector is considered emerging and still faces significant challenges.
Value chains are still under development and must become fully sustainable, producing zero waste and respecting cascading principles.
