B-Ferst is one of the CBE JU-funded projects that research new technologies aiming to cut water use considerably

After three decades, the European Commission recently published an update to the directive concerning urban wastewater treatment. This document aims to protect human health and the environment from the effects of urban wastewater discharges.

The common goal is to promote better monitoring and extend the circular economy approach, as well as reducing the water consumption since in 2019 38% of the population has been affected by water scarcity.

The overarching objective is to promote enhanced monitoring and extend the circular economy approach, while also aiming to reduce water consumption. It is important to remember that in 2019, 38% of the population was affected by water scarcity.

One of the initiatives funded by the CBE JU is B-Ferst, which strives to develop new value-added products contributing to the establishment of more sustainable production models. Wastewater treatment involves various processes that generate side streams that actually hold significant potential and offer opportunities for resource recovery. B-Ferst focuses on the development of new green fertilizers derived also from wastewater treatment. These fertilizers not only recover nutrients but also utilize biostimulants to protect the soil. Additionally, they contribute to the promotion of better sustainable agricultural practices, thereby enhancing the effectiveness of the entire value chain.
